My blogging experience

“Blogging”- This word to me is known yet unfamiliar. I used to blog when I was a 12 year-old teenager.I had an account at Xanga. It was very popular at that time. I created an account and tried to post about little things in life. This was my first blogging experience. I still remember we can upload images but not videos because Youtube wasn’t that popular. To me, the most exciting part of writing a blog post is getting responses from different readers.

However, I gave up my Xanga account because I was too young to understand and to appreciate the huge influential power that could be generated by a blog post.

10 years later, I once again created my own blog. In this two months, I tried to write my blog post and create my video. This time, I take it quite seriously and aimed to explore the reasons behind the blogging culture.

First, I learnt about copyright. Copyright can be the most important topic in the lesson of Writing for New Media. It is because when we are publishing something to the internet, everyone can see it and therefore, copyright is extra important in this case. At first, I knew nothing about creative commons and grey areas of Copyrights e.g. mashups and remixing. To respect others’ copyrights is not always that easy. For me, it takes more than an hour to find a background picture which is creative commons. Secondly, we need to make sure we add citations to those sentences which are not created by ourselves.

Secondly, I learnt some technical things about blogging. I created my own AVATAR !

Moreover, I finally learnt how to do hypertexts, hyperlinks, embed websites, youtube videos, images, etc… To be honest, I took quite a long time to figure out how to do it. I am fairly bad in using technological tools, sometimes it made me frustrated when I couldn’t find the correct button. However, I feel so happy when I got feedbacks from my teacher and friends.

Internet is all about creating and commenting. That would be really boring if we don’t get any feedback from others. Writing for New Media as a kind of communication, we expect participations. Sometimes, the blogger may not need to write something they know, but they can also ask for answer through blogging. I think this is quite interesting because different people can “gather” together and discuss about things.

All in all, I think “sharing” can include the meaning of Writing for New Media. Everyone is willing to share the experiences and feelings in different ways, like texts, images, videos, audios or even games. Then we look forward to other’s opinions, opinions become important. We ourselves are more aware of and involved in different issues in order to give opinions. This virtuous cycle helps to sustain the growth of the internet, which the internet emphasizes interaction. Information flows much more quickly in the virtual world because people can share in a fast and easy way, but most importantly, in a global way.

This course comes to an end. If you ask me why writing for new media is important? I will tell you that not only we can share through writing for new media, we can also provide information to the internet. Without our contribution to the internet, the internet will be useless.


P.S. I am really not quite good at using new media... I lost a few comment posts which I did post them days ago. I have to do it again...:( I think there's some problem about the blogging system because i saw the notice "YOUR COMMENT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED", but they still disappeared...anyways, New media is useful if you know how to use it:P

Our Live Legend- Steve Jobs

A few weeks ago, the world is shocked because of the death of Steve Jobs. To me, He is a live legend of creativity and innovations. I am also amazed by his passion that he has devoted all his life to technologies. His great inventions for Mac, Ipod, Iphone, Ipad have changed the world’s attitude towards technology. Moreover, his contributions to Pixar also led to a great step forward of the development of the animation industry. To be honest, I didn’t know him quite well before he left us. After the announcements of his death, hundreds of thousands of posts were uploaded to different media. Thank to the new media, I searched for anything about Steve Jobs with just a “click”.

First of all, Apple has created a webpage to remember this memorable genius:

It shows messages written by the public. You can also share yours at rememberingsteve@apple.com.

Here’s another website which is quite interesting. It is called “All about Steve Jobs.com”.Obviously, this website includes all sorts of information about Steve Jobs. You can find his basic profile, family and friends, his opinion awards work and life, his pictures and his short movies. The most interesting feature is that you can look for people’s opinion from the blog. The blogger will post news about Steve Jobs on the blog so that you can get the latest news from the blog.

Not only creates message boards and websites, people designed animations to show their admiration for Steve:

Some people also composed songs and music videos to him (I am sorry it’s in Cantonese. This video is so well composed that I really want to share it). The song is about his enormous contributions to technology. His revolutions of computer and mobile phone had enlightened the world. We will never forget this genius.

Writing for new media not only can report practical facts or events, it also assists people to show the love and care in different ways.

Steve, you are amazing, we will never forget you.

Innovations In Writing for New Media

In the past few weeks, my groupmates and I worked on the project of a new media tool. Jojo suggested that Storify would be a nice topic. So we found informations about it. Storify is a new platform for posting news and stories. Everyone can be a journalist to edit news with texts, images, videos and even comments from different social media groups. It is especially usefull for people who wants to follow news. They can simply click to read the whole story instead of searching choppy versions on the internet.

Another fascinating feature of this tool is that we don't no longer need to type any complicated codes ( like what im doing right now, so confusing!), but just drag-and-drop the information to your story. It is so user-friendly that we don't even need to check out the user guide.

Writing for new media is an important topic for everyone in the world. Not only adults should know more about it, but also children, teenagers and elderly.

Firstly, writing for new media makes life easier. Nowadays, we use internet and all kinds of related technologies to communicate with families, friends, teachers, students, colleagues, societies, government...And even STRANGERS! If you don't know how to make use of the tools, the communication process can be far more complicated and time-wasting.

Secondly, writing for new media helps us to know more about the world. It helps us to get involved. We can know any kinds of news and knowledge through them. Without all the new media tools, it is impossible for us to enrich ourselves at home.

Most importantly, writing for new media help us to interact and express ourselves so that everyone on earth is being linked together. There is no distance on the internet. We can attend class thousand miles away from the classroom; we can chat with strangers; we can write storys and blogs to the world...

Everything seems possible on the internet. It is gaining much more importance that we can hardly live without it. It is vital for everyone to know more about writing for new media in order to catch up with the fast-changing world.

Honoring a legend, Steve Jobs

To all well beings, it is a really sad news because we have lost a genius. Without him, we can hardly find i-phone, i-pad, i-pod... I am wondering how would life be if Steve Jobs had never invented these amazing technologies? hmm... maybe we would have better sense of location because we wouln't reply on any i-phone GPS systems. Perhaps we will have less entertainment as we would never know what is an App.


I am not a fan of Apple nor a fan of any technologies, but still, I deeply appretiate his contributions towards mankind. He created a new era of technologies, and his innovative ideas proved to us again and again that impossible is nothing.

Review on the Presentation of a New Media Tool

After the presentation of different new media tools, I found them so interesting, especially for the new presentation tool, Prezi, it can successfully draw attention from the audience. I think i will try to use it as my presentation tool instead of Microsoft power point.

Back to my presentation topic- Storify, it is an amazing tool to create and re-distribute a news or an event. By embedding different medias like images, videos, tags, comments, etc, people easily understand the whole story, as well as the comments or reactions of other people.

Although I appreciate its drag-and-drop feature, I am concern about the quality control of the stories. It is because writers can give biased view and information of the story, which may mislead the readers.

 Prezi and Storify are just tools to assist people to present ideas in a better way. After all, the most important thing is to have a good idea. :)
